The Outbreak of Dengue

During the past few years, Dengue has become a pandemic in Sri Lanka. It is a viral infection and can become deadly. As symptoms of dengue, high fever, muscle and joint pains, vomiting and rashes on the skin can be mentioned.

It is found that this virus spreads through a special mosquito breed called Aids. Aids mosquitoes bite four or five people at a time during the daytime. The infected person may or may not show the symptoms but acts as a source of dengue. Aids mosquito lays eggs in clear water. Water storage tanks, flower pots, vases, garden fountains, birdbaths, fridge trays, discarded bottles, tins, tires, coconut shells are identified as possible mosquito breeding grounds in Sri Lanka.

In order to eradicate dengue, we can take necessary actions in many ways. The first one is controlling the mosquito breeding places. People can clean the surrounding at least once a week. Destroying all the mosquito breeding places by disposing of garbage wisely will be a great help for this. To check whether this process is going well, the government can appoint officers. If the people do not obey these accepted rules, they should be punished legally.

Apart from controlling mosquito breeding, we can prevent mosquito bites. For that, we can use mosquito repellents during the daytime and install net screens on doors and windows. During the night, we can use a mosquito net. The most important step is giving notices to the people about the disease and how it can be controlled. If we follow these steps, dengue can be eradicated from Sri Lanka without much effort.
