Advantages and Disadvantages of Mass Media
A big positive impact associated with social media is that it is easier to make a large number of friends within a short time. Just a few years ago, it wasn’t really easy to connect with many people, unless you were extremely outgoing and could make conversations with almost everyone you would just meet.
Mass media encompasses much more than just news. It can be used for various purposes: Advocacy, both for business and social concerns. This also includes advertising, marketing, propaganda, public relations and political communication.
The technological innovation in mass media of educational communication means that education can now be transmitted to far off places with no geographical hindrance. A person sitting in Sri Lanka, for instance, can be benefited from a lecture being delivered in the United States.
The disadvantages of the media include the risk of inaccurate reporting and a loss of privacy. Sometimes, in a rush to be the first to break a story, the media puts out incorrect or inaccurate information.
Mass media may lead to individualism, personal interaction with humans become less and less. This is because people tend to spend too much of their time engrossed in what they are doing on the internet or watching interesting programs on TV and as a result of that, the time people devote to interacting with each other is minimized to a certain extent.
However, there are many advantages as well as disadvantages of mass media. What people have to do is to be alert to them. People can avoid the disadvantages and take the maximum benefit of the advantages
